AI tutorials

Short, illustrated lessons for understanding generative AI, using it to explore a topic, and keeping your own judgment in the loop.

Start here: write your own answer to an input below, then compare it with “Check your result”. You can complete this comparison on this page without an AI account. Sending a prompt to an AI is optional; external research needs the relevant source.

How a language model creates a response

A language model learns statistical patterns from training examples. Given your message and the conversation so far, it generates a likely continuation one piece at a time. This is useful for drafting and explaining, but it does not look up truth automatically.

Try it yourself

Input example

Ask: “A club has 12 members; 3 are absent. How many attend? Explain the subtraction.”

Do this

Solve it yourself first, ask an AI, then underline the numerical claim and its reasoning.

Check your result

The answer is 9 because 12 − 3 = 9. Check the arithmetic, even if the explanation sounds confident.

Limits

One correct answer does not measure model reliability; repeat with your own small problem.

Research with AI without losing the sources

Start with a narrow question. Ask for a search plan or a list of claims to verify, then open the original sources yourself. Record which source supports each important claim and where sources disagree.

Try it yourself

Input example

Research question: “Does my school allow phones during lunch?”

Do this

Find the school’s current policy yourself. Copy the relevant paragraph and ask AI to list the rule, exceptions, and missing information using only that text.

Check your result

Write one sentence with the policy URL, date, and supporting passage. If lunch is not mentioned, record “not established” rather than guessing.

Limits

A general web answer cannot establish your school’s policy. Check that the source applies to your campus and year.

Use AI as a study partner

Give the tool your level and learning goal. Ask it to explain one concept, quiz you without revealing the answer, and then respond to your attempt with a hint. Check explanations against your course materials.

Try it yourself

Input example

Ask: “Quiz me on 3/4 + 1/8. Give one hint only after my attempt.”

Do this

Write an answer before asking for feedback. After feedback, close the chat and solve 1/2 + 3/8 on paper.

Check your result

The answers are 7/8 and 7/8. Explain why the denominators must match; a copied answer alone is not success.

Limits

AI feedback can be wrong. Compare the method with a textbook or teacher’s example.

External source index — separate from the on-site lessons above. Original wording is preserved: Microsoft Learn uses English; community prompts and server descriptions are mainly English and may contain other languages. These are not translated editions.

Snapshot collected 2026-10-21 (UTC), not a live feed. We have not tried every course, prompt, or server. A listing does not prove quality, current availability, or safety.

Selection: AI/ML topics and related products from Microsoft Learn, plus their child units. Some unit summaries and links come from the parent module. Check prerequisites and whether the linked module contains the lesson you need.
